Tampa Theatre As Time Goes On Free stream of consciousness. Tampa Theatre Announces T2 Microcinema For generations, Tampa Theatre has sought to create a cinematic experience like no other: it was built in 1926 as one of Americas most elaborate movie palaces; has retrofitted the historic landmark with countless technical upgrades ranging from recorded sound in 1929 to digital projection in 2014; and presents some 550 film screenings each year on its single screen in front of a soaring, star-lit 1, 200-seat house. Today, the landmark Theatre goes public with plans to create a second unique filmgoing experience on Franklin Street by introducing the microcinema movement to Tampa. The intimate new screening room will seat between 40-50, and will occupy the storefront under Tampa Theatres historic marquee that currently houses The Nature Shop. Construction is expected to begin as early as spring 2020, and the new space – affectionately nicknamed “T2” by staff – will open by early 2021. “The addition of a second screen fundamentally changes our business model for the better, ” says Tampa Theatre President & CEO John Bell. “There is a reason that a single-screen cinema hasnt been built in 60 years. T2 will allow us to serve our community in new ways by doubling our ‘shelf space and giving us the kind of programming flexibility Tampa Theatre has never had before. ” Expected to cost about 1. 3 million to build, T2s creation will be funded in part by a 650, 000 grant through the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners Capital Asset Preservation (CAP) program and other private donations. Local architectural firm Kreher/Barna has already begun the early design phase, working closely with Boston Light & Sound – the industry-leading company also responsible for A/V at the Sundance Film Festival and Martin Scorseses private screening room – to create a superior viewing experience from the ground up. “Our guiding principle with Tampa Theatre has always been faithful restoration and preservation of the historic building first, with compelling programming coming in a very close second, ” Bell says. “But with T2, we have – for the first time – an opportunity to start with a blank piece of paper and design the ultimate screening room with top-of-the line technology and perfect sight lines. I want Tampas true cinephiles to consider it the best screening room in town. ”.

Tampa Theatre and AEG Presents are proud to announce that internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, whistler, and songwriter Andrew Bird will perform LIVE on Tampa Theatres stage at 7:30pm Wednesday, April 22. Andrew Bird has recorded and toured extensively worldwide. He has recorded with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, appeared as “Dr. Stringz” on Jacks Big Music Show, and headlined concerts at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and festivals worldwide. Bird performed as the Whistling Caruso in Disneys The Muppets movie, scored the FX series Baskets, performed at the New Yorker Festival, and collaborated with inventor Ian Schneller on Sonic Arboretum, an installation that exhibited at New Yorks Guggenheim Museum, Bostons ICA, and the MCA Chicago. Bird has been a featured TED Talks presenter and a New York Times op-ed contributor. Additionally, Bird hosts an ongoing live-streamed series of performances called Live from the Great Room, putting the creative process on display for fans as he performs and converses with friends and collaborators in a candid, intimate setting. More recently, Bird has released a series of site-specific improvisational short films and recordings called Echolocations, recorded in remote and acoustically interesting spaces: a Utah canyon, an abandoned seaside bunker, the middle of the Los Angeles River, and a reverberant stone-covered aqueduct in Lisbon. Birds latest album, My Finest Work Yet, was released March 22, 2019, on Loma Vista Recordings. Bird will be supported at his Tampa Theatre date by Erika Wennerstrom, who is taking a break from the critically-beloved Austin-based band Heartless Bastards to strike out as a solo act. Fans can rest assured that what theyve grown to love about Wennerstroms music is still front-and-center. Her trademark vocals that NPR so aptly calls “warm yet gritty, throaty yet sweet, gigantic, yet intimate” are still her stock in trade, and the bluesy, rock vibes that Relix describes as “smoky, late night [rock] that exists somewhere between Royal Trux and the Rolling Stones” have only gotten smokier and bluesier. In partnership with RPM, 1 per ticket on the ‘My Finest Work Yet Tour will be donated to Our Finest Work Yet Fund to benefit organizations like Utah Diné Bikéyah, Conservation Lands Foundation, GreenWave, and Save the Boundary Waters who are protecting our national monuments, oceans, lakes, and parks through preservation and investment in local communities. Tickets range from 32. 50-60. 00 plus applicable fees, and will go on sale at 10:00am Friday, Dec. 6 at the historic Franklin Street Box Office and online.

LIMELIGHT is a unique proposition: the opportunity to enjoy an authentic, in-person conversation with some of the nations most illuminating speakers, all within the context of one of the citys most stunning historic restoration projects. Far from catching a five-minute “talk” video on your phone or laptop, LIMELIGHT is an elegant evening of current, anecdotal, “behind the headlines” stories about each speakers unique experiences for nearly an hour, after which theyll take questions – maybe even YOUR question – to close out the evening. Whats the biggest secret about the Speakers Series? The best-known speakers are sure to offer engaging and provocative evenings for our subscribers, but we wouldnt be surprised if the lesser-known (or even completely unknown to you) names make the most profound impact. We also hope that our patrons will welcome the opportunity to hear from a speaker whose views they may not agree with, and even relish the prospect of challenging him or her with a question.
